Do You Parlé?

Long awaited Parlé Poetry Tour DVD, now available at a discount price exclusively on www.parlemagazine.com

The Parlé Poets’ performance was one of–if not the–best events I have attended throughout my time at Fordham. Each of the poets instantly connected with audience members; they all had such a unique ability to reach a wide variety of students– regardless of gender, race, class, or age– on an incredibly deep level.

For the past 5 years Parlé has hosted several Poetry Slams and Open Mic’s in order to spotlight that other talent, because not every one is a rapper or singer. We launched our first slam in 2005 and young poets from across the 5 boroughs came out in full force. Three of those poets were Marcus Wright, Kesed & Devin “The Poet”.

Over the years, the spectacular performances from the poets spoke volumes. The core finalists from the first Parlé Slam continued to make appearances at future events and over time the Parlé events became synonymous with the names of the poets. It only made sense to create something with it, so the Parlé With Us Poetry Tour was established in the last week of 2006 where they performed for the first time together. A handful of other poets and rappers were involved in the original collective, but the only remaining members of the fold today are Marcus, Kesed & Devin.

In 2007 the poets began performing at colleges in NYC officially making it a tour. In the years to come they would perform beyond NY, making their way to Florida, California, Wisconsin, Texas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and several other states across the United States.

In 2009, the third season of the tour, we decided to bring a camera along to capture the footage on the road. Do You Parlé? The official DVD of the captured footage highlight 5 shows at 5 venues in 5 states—New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, & Michigan. The DVD also includes behind the scenes footage and commentary

Rising Star ... The Kirko Bangz Interview

Sometimes, it must fall upon the journalist to ensure that what they are hearing in an interview is clear enough that they can truthfully and accurately present their subject's words as quotations. This may require asking for an answer repeatedly, admitting you missed something that could have been important, or actively picking and choosing which quotes should be completely captured in a form of verbal triage. Other times, it may simply require asking the subject to slow down because your cell phone's speaker is woefully inadequate. Such was the case with Kirko Bangz, and regrettably, I did not follow the advice laid out above. The following is what I can transcribe from my conversation with the Houston hopeful, whose Drake on promethazine approach has been reverberating within the scene.
