Why the Health Care Debate is Important to Us!!!

Amid skyrocketing gas and food prices, as well as other economic challenges, there remains a gathering storm in rising health care costs.

Over the past two decades, the Democratic Party has succeeded at sounding the alarm for health care reform. Yet, they have failed to deliver an actual solution. Some of these failures can be tied to the strong opposition from the Republican Party. Backed by powerful insurance companies, the GOP has successfully thwarted all attempts at healthcare reform. The failure of health care reform has left many Americans exposed to the uncertainty that one serious medical surgery will totally bankrupt them and their families. Also, with little to no health insurance coverage, people cannot afford regular preventative care from primary care physicians. Therefore, city emergency rooms become the place where many Americans receive care for sicknesses that could have been addressed with regular checkups. This takes critical trauma care resources away from the people that actually need it.

The storm is gathering….

Referring to a woman’s weight is a notion that can send chills down a man’s spine. “Do I tell her how she really looks in that dress, or do I lie?” Personally, I happen to be of the rare breed of woman that wants to know the truth. I prefer not to go into public resembling sausage cases. Unfortunately, not all of my sisters feel this way. I posted an informal poll and was surprised to see the results.

Why is your participation important?

Every 10 years the U.S. Census Bureau counts every resident in the United States as required by the Constitution.  Some people consider this an intrusive process, an attitude that is prevalent in the ethnic community; which is understandable. We’ve witnessed years of government incursions into our lives and thus remain mistrustful of anything with a federal seal on it.  However, the intent of the census is not to poke into anyone's business or find out about your personal matters.  The results of the 2010 Census will help our communities receive more than $400 billion in federal funds each year for the things that are critical to us and our families.  That's more than $4 trillion over a 10-year period.

Over the last few decades leading ladies of the African-American community have sported styles from Afros to braids & twists to waves and brush cuts, but none have caused more of an uproar than the current phenomenon known as the hair weave.
