On the Beat

The only advice column that spins both sides of the truth

Q: When’s the right time to have sex with a man you’re dating?

Side A: Waiting until marriage may not sound appealing, but it’s an option that you should discuss with your partner. Sex involves alot more than pleasure, like pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, so you should share it with someone that you really trust and love. And you should share it, only when both you and your partner are ready, which is the right time.

Side B: Anytime is the right time, as long as you’re both ready and you both use condoms! There’s no set timeframe for sex. I know couples who had sex, before they became a couple, and they’re still together. And I know couples who had sex, after they became a couple, and they’re no longer together. Focus on your relationship with your partner and leave the societal standards outside your bedroom door.

Q: Why do men have such a hard time keeping it real with women?  Wouldn't it be easier, if we all told each other exactly what we're looking for?

Side A: Yes, it’d be easier, if people were upfront about what they’re looking for in the opposite/same sex! Unfortunately, some guys just don’t care to be real. And that’s their problem. You should be concerned about what you bring to the table, how you conduct yourself with someone who interests you. If you’re honest, then chances are your honesty will be returned. If it’s not, move on, so you can be ready for the right person for you.

Side B: Oh please, girl! Why do women have such a hard time keeping it real with men? And yes, I answered your question with a question. Everybody keeping it real with everybody is fictional, but you should work on how you deal with the guys that you meet because that’s all that should matter to you. You can’t control what other people do, but you can control what you do and how you do it. Trust, when you keep it real,  you’ll attract people that do the same.

Rising Star ... The Kirko Bangz Interview

Sometimes, it must fall upon the journalist to ensure that what they are hearing in an interview is clear enough that they can truthfully and accurately present their subject's words as quotations. This may require asking for an answer repeatedly, admitting you missed something that could have been important, or actively picking and choosing which quotes should be completely captured in a form of verbal triage. Other times, it may simply require asking the subject to slow down because your cell phone's speaker is woefully inadequate. Such was the case with Kirko Bangz, and regrettably, I did not follow the advice laid out above. The following is what I can transcribe from my conversation with the Houston hopeful, whose Drake on promethazine approach has been reverberating within the scene.
